Everest Base Camp trek difficulty
Hard work, but no climbing: days of 3 to 8 hours on well-used trails, and the thin air does the rest.
The typical plan sleeps five nights above 4,000 m, the highest at Gorak Shep, 5,164 m.

How hard is the Everest Base Camp trek?
Harder than its trails look. You need no climbing skills or climbing kit on the standard route, but there are long, steep climbs, the one up to Namche Bazaar above all, and the altitude is a real test.

Altitude is the hard part
The height is the main challenge. The typical plan spends five nights above 4,000 m, one of them at Gorak Shep (5,164 m), and altitude sickness is a real risk at these heights.
Two rest days, at Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) and Dingboche (4,410 m), give your body time to get used to the thinner air: you walk higher in the day and come back down to sleep. Talk to your doctor before you go, and tell your guide each day how you feel.
| Day | Overnight | Altitude |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Phakding | 2,610 m |
| 2 | Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m |
| 3 | Namche Bazaar, rest day | 3,440 m |
| 4 | Tengboche | 3,860 m |
| 5 | Dingboche | 4,410 m |
| 6 | Dingboche, rest day | 4,410 m |
| 7 | Lobuche | 4,940 m |
| 8 | Gorak Shep | 5,164 m |
| 9 | Pheriche | 4,371 m |
| 10 | Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m |
| 11 | Lukla | 2,860 m |

Can a beginner trek to Everest Base Camp?
Yes, if you are fit and in no hurry. Lonely Planet’s guide says the trek needs stamina rather than superhuman powers, and Rough Guides says good boots are the only special kit you need.
Our reviewers include people on their first trek at altitude, like this one on the Annapurna Circuit.
“I had never ever done a high altitude trek. I went with zero experience and it was only because of my guide Narbin Magar that I cud successfully complete the Annapurna Circuit trek.”
