Rules on this route

  • From 1 September 2025 solo expeditions on 8,000 m peaks are banned and a guide is required for every two climbers above 8,000 m; other mountains need at least one guide per group.

Source: The Kathmandu Post, checked 1 October 2026

  • Restricted-area permits are issued only through listed trekking agencies, with insurance papers for trekkers, guides and porters.

Source: Department of Immigration, Government of Nepal, checked 1 October 2026

  • Since 22 March 2026 a restricted-area permit can be issued to a single trekker, who must still be accompanied by a licensed guide and book through a registered agency; one guide may lead at most seven trekkers. Before this, permits went only to groups of two or more.

Source: The Kathmandu Post, checked 1 October 2026

  • Summit credit: from 2022 the Himalayan Database credits a Manaslu summit only to climbers who reach the true highest point; those who stop on the foresummits (points called Shelf 2, C2 and C3) are credited with the foresummit. Ascents from 1956 to 2021 that stopped there keep their credit, with a note.

  • Restricted area permits are arranged through a registered trekking agency, which is responsible for rescue and logistics (Department of Immigration rules revised in March 2026)

Is this trip right for you?

Among the less technical 8,000 m peaks, with fixed ropes from Camp 1 to the summit, but a serious high-altitude expedition: crevassed glacier and steep ice between Camps 1 and 2, a headwall of about 40 degrees below Camp 4, a long summit day from 7,450 m, commonly with supplementary oxygen on commercial teams, and a short exposed ridge to the true summit. Avalanche risk is significant, including at Camp 3.
