Getting there

Fly to Lukla. In the spring and autumn peak seasons most Lukla flights leave from Manthali airport in Ramechhap district, not Kathmandu: about 130 km and 4 to 5 hours by road from Kathmandu, then a flight of about 20 minutes. Some teams drive the day before and sleep near the airport; others leave Kathmandu at about 2 to 3 am. Outside the peak seasons, and for a minority of peak-season flights, planes fly direct from Kathmandu, about 35 to 40 minutes.

Getting back

Walk back to Lukla, then in the peak seasons fly Lukla to Manthali (Ramechhap) and drive about 4 to 5 hours to Kathmandu; when direct flights run, fly Lukla to Kathmandu (about 35 to 40 minutes).

Rules on this route

Is this trip right for you?

A technical alpine climb, much harder than the trekking peaks. The Southwest Ridge is exposed rock, mixed ground, snow and ice: sections of British 'Severe' rock between Camps 1 and 2, the near-vertical Yellow Tower (about 15 m, usually climbed on a fixed rope with an ascender), mixed ground past the Grey Tower, and snow and ice up to about 50 degrees above Camp 3 to the summit. Ropes are fixed for most or all of the route, but climbers must move independently on fixed lines, abseil many times on the descent and cope with sustained exposure and objective danger from the Dablam serac. Alpine grade about D; American grade VI 5.9 on the first-ascent line. Summit day 12 hours or more.
